Rose Wylie: Let it Settle

The Royal Academy of Arts, London, announced today that leading British artist Rose Wylie will present an exhibition of paintings and drawings at The Gallery at Windsor, Vero Beach, Florida, opening 28 January 2020. This will be the third annual exhibition at Windsor presented in collaboration with the Royal Academy, as part of a three-year curatorial partnership launched in 2018 and the first exhibition in the programme by a female artist.

Born in 1934, Rose Wylie creates paintings and drawings that on first glance appear aesthetically simplistic, not seeming to align with any style or movement, but on closer inspection, are revealed to be wittily observed and subtly sophisticated meditations on the nature of visual representation itself. Drawing ideas from film, fashion photography, literature, mythology, news images, sports, and individuals she meets in her day-to-day life, Wylie paints colorful and exuberant compositions that are uniquely recognizable. These works make use of an idiosyncratic visual lexicon, the directness of cartoonish figures, and a flattened perspective, while simultaneously betraying a deep awareness of art history and painterly conventions.

For this exhibition, Wylie will present a group of paintings and drawings that reflect her interest in popular culture, deftly merging political, social, and autobiographical elements. The exhibition includes subjects as diverse as the historic British monarchy and the imaginary character Snow White, memorial crests and castles. The exhibition has been curated by Rodolphe von Hofmannsthal of David Zwirner and Jari-Juhani Lager, her long-time representative.

The layers of newspaper and tabloids that line her studio floor are a frequent source of material for the artist, as she encounters images by chance while working. Filtered through Wylie’s memory, fairytale figures, celebrities, movie characters, athletes, and other people both real and imagined are transposed to familiar and everyday settings creating a productive tension between fact and fantasy, and perception and reality.

Wylie’s work has been the subject of renewed critical attention in recent years, with major presentations in Europe including at Tate Modern; Plymouth Arts Centre, England; Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Málaga (all 2018); Serpentine Sackler Gallery, London (2017); and Turner Contemporary, Margate (2016). This show will provide an important opportunity to showcase the artist’s work in the United States, introducing her unique style to an even wider audience.

There will be a fully illustrated book published by Windsor Press and Royal Academy Enterprises, including an interview with RA Artistic Director Tim Marlow.

The programme for the three-year curatorial partnership between the Royal Academy of Arts and The Gallery at Windsor has been selected by The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, Windsor co-founder and Creative Director for The Gallery at Windsor, Christopher Le Brun, President of the Royal Academy, and Tim Marlow, Artistic Director of the Royal Academy.

There is no admission fee to visit The Gallery.  Exhibition visitors may choose to support The Windsor Charitable Foundation with a suggested donation of $10.  This gift is tax-deductible and is designated to support arts education.

About The Gallery at Windsor, Vero Beach, Florida
Founded in 2002, The Gallery at Windsor is an independent art space at the heart of the Windsor community. The Gallery annually invites curators to respond to the space with museum-quality shows of contemporary art. The Hon. Hilary M. Weston serves as Creative Director for The Gallery.

Rose Wylie
Born in 1934, Wylie studied at Folkestone and Dover School of Art, Kent, and the Royal College of Art, London, from which she graduated in 1981. In 2014, she won the John Moores Painting Prize, presented by the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; and in 2015, a painting by Wylie was included in London’s Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, for which she won the Charles Wollaston Award. The same year she was also elected a Senior Royal Academician. In 2017, the Serpentine Gallery London, presented a major solo exhibition of Wylie’s work, which was accompanied by a catalogue featuring texts by Melissa Blanchflower and Barry Schwabsky, in addition to artists Alvaro Barrington, Tal R, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. In 2018, the multi-venue exhibition History Painting opened at Plymouth Arts Centre and The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art, Devon; the exhibition traveled to Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange in Cornwall, England. Also in 2018, a survey of the artist’s work, titled Hullo, Hullo, was presented at Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga. In 2020, Wylie will have her first solo museum presentation in the United States at the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado.

The artist has been represented by David Zwirner since 2017. Wylie’s first exhibition at David Zwirner, London, Horse, Bird, Cat, was held in 2016 and her second solo presentation Lolita’s House was on view in 2018.

Wylie’s work can be found in prominent collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, including the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; Space K, Seoul; Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg, Germany; Tate, London; and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. She lives and works in Kent, England.
