    Broadway Meets Opera at Windsor

    February 25, 2020 | Windsor Florida |

On Friday evening, February 21, 2020, Windsor hosted an enriching musical program at its Town Hall in collaboration with nonprofit partner, Vero Beach Opera. The evening was full of whimsical melodies and critically acclaimed talent, including opera singers María Antúnez and Martín Nusspaumer, as well as Grammy award-winning conductor and pianist Caren Levine.

This highly anticipated event opened with a welcome from Windsor Member and strong supporter of the annual program, Mr. Christopher Mortenson. President and Executive Director of Vero Beach Opera, Dr. Joan Ortega-Cowan, addressed the attendees on the company’s scholarship program, which awards cash prizes to rising young singers, enabling them to compete in national competitions including the National Council Auditions at the Metropolitan Opera. Román Ortega-Cowan, Artistic Director of Vero Beach Opera, introduced the artists.

Performed ballads included songs from Broadway hits such as West Side Story and Les Misérables, and operatic arias from Carmen, La Bohème, and Rigoletto. Performances were concluded with closing remarks by Windsor’s Marketing Director, Jane Smalley, who stated, “The generous donations made by Windsor Members to the Vero Beach Opera, over the three years we have been presenting this concert, are making a real and positive impact on talented young singers like María and Martín.”

As part of the Windsor Charitable Foundation’s annual programming to support local arts and cultural nonprofits, considerable donations were made by guests in support of the Vero Beach Opera’s scholarship fund for promising young opera singers.  Established in 2015, The Windsor Charitable Foundation, a 501c3 organization, was created as an avenue for Windsor Members to give back to the local community.

The mission of the Vero Beach Opera is to enrich the cultural lives of its community through fully staged professional opera productions, concerts and international vocal competitions of the highest quality which promote an increased awareness and deeper appreciation of opera to expanding and diverse Florida audiences of all ages.  For more information on the Vero Beach Opera, visit www.verobeachopera.org.
