The Gallery at Windsor is pleased to present A Piece of Waterfall in the Sound of Crickets, an expansive solo exhibition of work by Costa Rican artist Federico Herrero, which will be on view from January 27 through April 26, 2024. This exhibition, curated by Elena Ketelsen González, Assistant Curator at MoMA PS1, is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by DelMonico Books, including a foreword by The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, an essay by Ketelsen González, and an interview with the artist and Bernardo Mosqueira.

A Piece of Waterfall in the Sound of Crickets brings together a selection of recent paintings and monotypes by Herrero, who for over twenty years has produced a vast body of works on canvas, paper, walls, and streets, including many site-specific commissions and architectural interventions. The exhibition takes its name from a poem by celebrated Costa Rican poet Alfonso Chase (b. 1944), in which he reflects upon the mundane beauty of the sights and sounds of the country that has long inspired his poetry, despite frequent trips to New York City and Europe.

Like Chase, Herrero’s practice often looks beyond his surroundings but remains deeply situated in the lush urban setting of San José, Costa Rica, where he creates geometric abstractions that breathe outwards into the open structures of a city in flux or what Herrero calls “incomplete”, and beyond into the highly ordered cities of the North. From this context emerge works that achieve harmonic resolution while recalling the colors and contours of a city constantly transformed by tropical growth and decay.

Vivid colors merge together to mirror overgrown terrains, while muted hues evoke sun-weathered buildings, as lines blur together to suggest a landscape view from above or the silhouette of a figure in motion. Triangles—both right-side up and upside down—conjure images of volcanoes or mountains. Shapes fall into each other to form precarious yet balanced compositions, reflecting an ever-changing topography, while newer paintings like Lost at Sea (2023) verge on the figurative, resembling a ferry crossing an expanse of ocean.

These paintings speak to Herrero’s profound connection to the territory he works from, in which he—and his studio—occupy the space where the human-made becomes entangled with the natural landscape. Together, the works in the exhibition demonstrate Herrero’s maturity as a painter who over two decades has made sensuous works that are rooted in a profound understanding of the interplay between color, form, intuition, and the place that spurs their creation.

“I am delighted to welcome Federico Herrero to exhibit at Windsor,” said The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, Windsor Cofounder and Creative Director of The Gallery at Windsor. “This exciting show follows our long-standing curatorial focus at The Gallery, which has presented a diverse roster of some of the world’s leading contemporary artists for more than two decades.”

Federico Herrero was the recipient of the Young Artist’s Prize at the 49th Venice Biennale (2001). He has exhibited extensively in museums worldwide. Recent exhibitions include Tactiles, Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon, Portugal (2022); Barreras Blandas, Museo Nacional de Costa Rica, San Jose, Costa Rica (2020); Tempo aberto, Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói, São Paulo (2019); Open Envelope, Witte de With, Rotterdam, the Netherlands (2018); and Alphabet, a site-specific installation for the atrium of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2018).

His work is in the permanent collection of numerous institutions including the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan; Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Japan; Tate Modern, London, UK; MUDAM, Luxembourg; MUSAC, Castilla y León, Spain; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain; Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; and São Paulo Museum of Art, São Paulo, Brazil.

    About Windsor

Established in 1989, Windsor is a private residential sporting club community spanning 472 acres of lush barrier island between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean in Vero Beach, Florida. In the early 1990s, W. Galen Weston and the Hon. Hilary M. Weston of Toronto, Canada visited South Florida in search of a winter home for themselves and their children. In Vero Beach they became enchanted by a property that over the next decades would become a cherished home, passion project and ultimately a critically acclaimed residential community. Windsor was designed by renowned town planners Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk in the New Urbanism style of residential living. It offers public and community spaces framed by timeless architecture and landscape design that celebrates its tropical and unspoiled setting. Windsor is comprised of 350 homesites in various styles, including village homes, cottages and country estates, all remarkable for their signature Anglo-Caribbean architecture and gracious living. Residents enjoy privacy and seclusion combined with the finest amenities, exemplary services and sporting activities.  Windsor is embarking on its final development phase with the launch of the North Village, a 47-acre neighborhood featuring 40 residences, new and enhanced amenities and a heightened commitment to sustainability. windsorflorida.com

Windsor, a 472-acre private residential community located along Florida’s Treasure Coast, is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Ryan Skipton as the course’s newest Director of Golf. With over twenty years of professional experience, Skipton will oversee Windsor’s 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed championship golf course. As part of his role, he will be introducing the newest golf technology to Windsor, along with a newly hired PGA Professional team.

A graduate of Coastal Carolina University’s PGA Golf Management program, Skipton most recently served as the Director of Golf for The Ford Field & River Club in Richmond Hill, GA. Previously, he held positions with the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, NY; The Creek in Locust Valley, NY; the Dye Preserve in Jupiter, FL; and Pebble Beach Golf Links, CA. In 2021, Skipton received the Georgia PGA Professional Development Award.

“For more than three decades, Windsor has prided itself on its best-in-class golf program, offering a unique approach to golfers at every level,” said Betsy Hanley, President of Windsor Real Estate, Inc. “We are excited to see the leadership, innovation and new technology Ryan will bring to the course at Windsor.”

Skipton plans to introduce new technology to Windsor’s golf program including the Trackman 4, a cutting-edge dual radar launch monitor that captures data for the entire ball fight and club data from impact. This new technology will offer players real-time feedback and suggestions for improvement of their golf game.

With a goal of continuing to promote the game of golf to members at any level, Skipton has recruited five new PGA Professional staff to join him at Windsor. The additional staff will allow for a stronger presence on the course where they will monitor play and be available to golfers throughout the day. The team also will help with structured clinics and teaching programs aimed at beginners as well as men and ladies. One of the new Windsor hires will serve as a dedicated on-site club fitter.

“I have always admired the golf offering at Windsor, from the challenge of the course to the strong focus on member enjoyment” said Ryan Skipton. “I am thrilled to begin this journey at Windsor and to continue to elevate the golf experience for the community and its growing membership.”

Windsor’s 18-hole golf course was originally designed in 1991 by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. In 2019, Jones Jr. returned with his team to carry out an extensive renovation of the 120-acre course that recaptured the original design intent and updated golf holes in concert with today’s game. Highlights of the renovation include replacement of grass on all greens, tees, fairways, and roughs; enlargement and reorientation of tee boxes; and restoration of original hole locations and bunker shapes. To remain ecologically sensitive and reduce the golf club’s carbon footprint, the renovation introduced a more drought-tolerant variety of Bermuda grass, reduced areas that need to be mowed, and a new state-of-the-art irrigation system. The Windsor course allows all members to play at their own pace, as golfers enjoy a no-tee time policy.

Windsor, a renowned luxury residential sporting club community in Vero Beach, Florida, dedicated a sculpture in honor of the community’s late co-founder W. Galen Weston (1940 – 2021) at a ceremony on the grounds of Windsor on Friday, November 25, 2022. Designed by celebrated British contemporary artist Sir Michael Craig-Martin, the sculpture depicts an architect’s compass.

Mr. Weston passed away peacefully at home at Windsor in Vero Beach, Florida, on April 12, 2021, at the age of 80, after a long illness faced with courage and dignity.

The sculpture was funded entirely by the W. Galen Weston Memorial Sculpture Committee spearheaded by Windsor Member, Charlie Baillie.

“Shortly after Galen passed away, several Members expressed the view that we should undertake a project to honor the individual who, together with his beloved wife Hilary, had the vision, desire and determination to conceive and develop this unique paradisiacal community which has so enhanced and changed many of our lives,” stated Baillie.

The Hon. Hilary M. Weston and Alannah Weston, Mr. Weston’s wife and daughter, invited Sir Michael Craig-Martin to design a sculpture that would represent the many facets of Mr. Weston’s character and legacy at Windsor.

“I chose the compass as the object that would best represent Galen as thinker, planner and creator. His foresight, passion and commitment is nowhere more evident than here at Windsor,” said Craig-Martin of his design. “The compass’ monumental scale seems a fitting tribute to capture his boundless ambition and achievements.”

Standing at 13 feet in height, the magenta-colored, galvanized steel sculpture has been installed at the terminus of Windsor Boulevard, the community’s major thoroughfare, where it is framed by a stunning view of Windsor’s Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course.

The Weston family, a significant supporter of the arts, founded The Gallery at Windsor in 2002. Home to important works from the George Weston Collection, The Gallery also invites curators to respond to the space with museum-quality shows of contemporary works, including paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture and multi-media.

In 2019, The Gallery at Windsor presented Craig-Martin in his most comprehensive exhibition in the United States at that time. Comprising more than 35 paintings, sculptures, prints and editions, the exhibition entitled Present Sense was the second annual exhibition at Windsor in a three-year curatorial collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

VERO BEACH, FL – October 25, 2022 – Windsor, a renowned luxury residential sporting club community in Vero Beach, Florida, is pleased to announce plans for its  final phase of development. The last remaining undeveloped portion of Windsor is a lush 47-acre swath of land adjacent to the banks of the Indian River Lagoon. A thoughtfully crafted master plan calls for it to comprise 40 residences, an array of wellness-focused amenities and green spaces. Advanced sustainable design will minimize negative impacts on the environment and protect the land as well as the wildlife living there.

In keeping with the classic, yet design-forward strategy for which Windsor is recognized, single family residential lots and a select number of Row Houses will offer residents the opportunity to create a bespoke home that provides tranquility within a vibrant community. The North Village will also feature a new and enhanced 14,000- square-foot Fitness and Wellness Centre, scenic trails, a bird hide, and a series of artist- and architect-designed pavilions. Additionally, the new plan will create a direct connection to the Indian River through a dedicated kayak launch with storage facility.

“The North Village will provide new, unique experiences for Windsor’s multi- generational membership,” said Alannah Weston, Principal of Windsor. “This new development shows our continuing and expanded commitment to sustainability within the context of our local ecosystem, of which we view our community as an important part.”

The North Village, from its architecture and building processes to its thoughtful landscapes and operations, has been designed to minimize environmental impacts and create coastal resilience suited to the area’s climate and Windsor’s lifestyle through a process that considers all key resident, community and ecological stakeholders.

“Sustainability is a primary inspiration for the North Village and will continue to be a priority for the future of the Windsor community overall,” said Doug Farr, Principal of Farr Associates, who has served as a consultant for the expansion planning. “The sustainability efforts put in place will ensure a more resilient future and legacy at Windsor, minimizing negative climate impacts and contributing to South Florida’s ecological stewardship.”

A hand-selected team of designers, local experts and conservationists led by Isaac Stein and Maggie Tsang of Dept. LLC will oversee the naturalistic design of the many public green spaces and waterscapes of the North Village. Assisted by celebrated landscape designer and educator, Edwina von Gal, the team will seek to show the positive impact human development can have on the natural environment.

“Windsor is a community that thrives on its natural beauty and the refined sensibilities of its homeowners,” said von Gal. “The landscape plan of the North Village will include a series of ecosystems featuring native species that will foster an environment in which wildlife can continue to flourish.”

Meanwhile, under the ongoing involvement and expertise of DPZ CoDESIGN, the North Village will have an updated architectural design code to allow for the natural and subtle evolution of the Windsor style and introduction of enhanced sustainable design measures while still aligning with the aesthetic guidelines of the existing community. Many of Windsor’s signature design features such as courtyards, single room depths, building materials and a light color palette will remain in the code, but these elements will be modified to engender a more contemporary and subtler expression of Windsor’s aesthetic. This will open the door for a new generation of residential architects to realize their most ambitious designs at Windsor.

Sales are slated to launch in the first quarter of 2023.

Windsor is pleased to announce that Moor, Baker & Associates Architects, P.A. has won the Palladio Award for New Design & Construction for the firm’s work on a Windsor South Village residence.

Co-produced by TRADITIONAL BUILDING magazine and the TRADITIONAL BUILDING Conference Series, the annual Palladio Awards honor outstanding achievement in traditional design. The event recognizes both individual designers and design teams whose work enhances the beauty and humane qualities of the built environment. This year’s 21st annual Palladio Awards competition recognized 14 architectural firms across the commercial, institutional, public and residential sectors.

“This Windsor residence is an undulating sculpture,” said Nancy Berry, editor of TRADITIONAL BUILDING. “It’s compact, with a country garden feel and the spiral staircase is a work of art.”

Located in Windsor’s peaceful South Village neighborhood, the elegant 4,900 square foot, five-bedroom home was conceived as a symmetrical garden villa in the manner of grand country estates. With its sculpted stucco façade and interior architecture, the design is a sophisticated contemporary interpretation of traditional Anglo-Caribbean design.

“Fitting this much house on a small lot was our biggest challenge,” said Peter Moor, principal of Moor, Baker & Associates Architects, P.A. “But the planning and design guidelines mandated by Windsor are what make it a great place. These guidelines spurred our creativity.”

Moor, Baker & Associates Architects, P.A. works with a diversified portfolio of projects across the Vero Beach and greater South Florida area. The firm has received numerous design awards, including the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s 2020 Addison Mizner Award for Single Family Homes under 5,000 square feet for this same Windsor South Village home. Their work has been featured in several books and periodicals including the ICAA’s A Decade of Art & Architecture 1992-2002, Beachside: Windsor Architecture and Design, At Home on the Water, Elle Décor, Garden & Gun, House Beautiful and Milieu.
