Windsor is pleased to announce that the Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) will present leading British artist Michael Craig-Martin’s Bulb (magenta) (2015). The powder-coated steel sculpture is presented in conjunction with the Royal Academy of Arts and The Gallery at Windsor exhibition titled Michael Craig-Martin Present Sense, which will be on display at Windsor from January 29 to April 25, 2019.  Bulb will be on view until May 2019.

Present Sense will represent Craig-Martin’s most comprehensive exhibition in the United States to date, including recent paintings, sculptures, and prints. Comprising more than 35 works and extending beyond the walls of The Gallery into the grounds of Windsor, the exhibition will also include three new paintings of three new subjects completed in 2018; Untitled (stiletto), Untitled (split-level) and Untitled (wireless).

Craig-Martin is represented by Gagosian and Alan Cristea Gallery and the exhibition is curated by Hannah Freedberg, Director at Gagosian London.

Craig-Martin has long called attention to the simple objects surrounding us, transforming them into bold and playful icons. Bulb is one of a series of large sculptures that Craig-Martin created based on such everyday objects. The powder-coated steel delineates the unmistakable form of a lightbulb. Its size (over eleven feet tall) and bright pink color make it stand out from the surrounding landscape. The landscape is also brought into the image itself, since it is visible inside the form rather than simply surrounding it. Bulb’s brightly colored lines place it in an ambiguous space between sculpture and drawing. While clearly recognizable as a large, metal sculpture, it also has the flat and linear qualities of a drawing. Craig-Martin has said, “I thought the objects we value least because they were ubiquitous were actually the most extraordinary.” The lightbulb, one of the most common objects in the 21st century, transformed the way society lived and functioned when it became commercially available in the 19th century. The lightbulb’s association with inspired thought, or the eureka moment, adds an additional layer of interest to this striking piece.

Craig-Martin has said about Bulb (magenta), “In order to make the sculptures as I do, the breakthrough for me was discovering that it was possible to have these two-dimensional sculptures stand up unsupported in the landscape buy burying the support underground. Then you have the full illusionism of the object sitting just on the ground. No place is that more-clear than here with the lightbult which has a comparatively small point of contact, and appears poised delicately almost like a dance on a single point.

I was very touched that when Vero Beach Museum of Art learned of my exhibition at Windsor they asked if it would be possible to show one of the sculptures at the same time. It is a very nice collaboration between Windsor and the museum which has enabled this sculpture to be there, where a different audience might see it and perhaps want to visit Windsor and see the complete exhibition, the paintings, prints and other sculptures which are there.”

The Gallery at Windsor is open to the public by appointment Tuesday through Thursday between 10am and 4pm. In addition to docent-led tours in The Gallery, Windsor will lead two public sculpture tours on February 18 and March 18, 2019 for those interested in viewing all six sculptures on display in the grounds at Windsor. To schedule an appointment, contact The Gallery at 772 388 4071 or via email to gallery@windsorflorida.com.

About the Royal Academy of Arts

The Royal Academy of Arts was founded by a group of artists and architects, under the patronage of King George III, in 1768. It has a unique position in being an independent, privately funded charity led by eminent artists and architects whose purpose is to promote the creation, understanding and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate. The Royal Academy has launched a new campus as part of the celebrations of its 250th anniversary year. Following a transformative redevelopment, designed by the internationally-acclaimed architect Sir David Chipperfield RA and supported by the National Lottery, the new Royal Academy of Arts reveals more of the elements that make the RA unique – sharing with the public historic treasures from its Collection, the work of its Royal Academicians and the Royal Academy Schools, and its role as a center for learning and debate about art and architecture – alongside its world-class exhibitions program. royalacademy.org.uk

The Royal Academy of Arts, London, announces that leading British artist Michael Craig-Martin will present an exhibition of painting, sculpture and prints at The Gallery at Windsor, Vero Beach, Florida, opening 29 January, 2019. This will be the second annual exhibition at Windsor presented in collaboration with the Royal Academy, as part of a three-year curatorial partnership launched in 2018, and the first exhibition of outdoor sculpture to be presented at Windsor.

Born in 1941 in Dublin, Ireland, Michael Craig-Martin moved to the United States with his family, spending most of his childhood in Washington DC. He studied Fine Art at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture from 1961-66. Among his fellow students at Yale were Richard Serra, Brice Marden, Nancy Graves, Chuck Close, Jennifer Bartlett and Jon Borofsky. After his studies, Craig-Martin was offered a teaching position at the Bath Academy of Art, moving back to the UK in 1966. Initially intending only to stay a year or two, he has made England his life and career ever since.

In 1969, Craig-Martin had his first solo exhibition at the Rowan Gallery, London. He participated in the definitive exhibition of British conceptual art, “The New Art” at the Hayward Gallery in 1972. Over the past 50 years he has had numerous exhibitions and installations worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; IVAM, Valencia, Spain; Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria; Haus Esters, Krefeld, Germany; Himalayas Museum, Shanghai which travelled to the Hubei Museum, Wuhan, and most recently the Serpentine Gallery, London. He represented Britain in the 23rd Sao Paulo Biennal. A retrospective of his work was presented at the Whitechapel Gallery, London in 1989 and a second at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin in 2006.

Titled Present Sense, the exhibition at Windsor will be his most comprehensive in the United States to date, including recent paintings, sculptures, prints and editions. Comprising over 35 works and extending beyond the walls of The Gallery into the grounds of Windsor, the exhibition will also include three new paintings completed in 2018; Untitled (stiletto), Untitled (split-level) and Untitled (wireless).

Throughout his career Craig-Martin has produced work in a variety of media, which explore the nature and basic principles of visual language and perception through the use of everyday objects, images, and materials. Indeed, his entire oeuvre has become a comprehensive record of the objects of our time. In recent years, he has focused on the technological objects that have come to dominate and define contemporary living, including laptops, iPhones and wireless headphones. His work over the last 30 years is easily recognised by his hallmark style of rigorously precise line drawing combined with his characteristic use of intensely vibrant colours.

Craig-Martin taught at Goldsmiths College School of Art, London, from 1974 to 1988 and from 1994 to 2000. During this time he became a powerful influence on a generation of his students who would become known as the young British artists, including Julian Opie, Damien Hirst, Liam Gillick, Gary Hume, Mat Collishaw, Sarah Lucas, Fiona Rae, Michael Landy and Ian Davenport.

His memoir and advice for aspiring artists, On Being An Artist, was published in 2015 by London-based publisher Art / Books. Craig-Martin served as a Tate Artist Trustee from 1989-99 and was closely involved in the development of Tate Modern. He was awarded a CBE in 2000, elected as a Royal Academician in 2006 and knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to art in 2016.

He is represented by Gagosian and Alan Cristea Gallery.

Present Sense will be curated by Hannah Freedberg, Director at Gagosian London. There will be a fully illustrated catalogue published by Windsor Press and the Royal Academy, with an essay by contemporary art critic, editor and writer Ben Luke and an interview with Michael Craig-Martin and Tim Marlow, Artistic Director, Royal Academy.

The programme for the three-year curatorial partnership between the Royal Academy of Arts and The Gallery at Windsor which began with Grayson Perry RA has been selected by The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, Windsor co-founder and Creative Director for The Gallery at Windsor, Christopher Le Brun, President of the Royal Academy, and Tim Marlow, Artistic Director of the Royal Academy. An exhibition by a third Royal Academician will take place in 2020.

The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, co-founder of Windsor and the Creative Director for The Gallery at Windsor said  “We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with the Royal Academy of Arts and its internationally renowned programme of exhibitions.  It is an honour to welcome Sir Michael Craig-Martin to Windsor as the second Royal Academician in our exhibition series and the first artist to present an outdoor installation at Windsor. Following on the heels of the immensely successful 2018 Grayson Perry RA exhibition, we continue our 16-year tradition of exhibiting world-class contemporary artists at The Gallery at Windsor.”

Christopher Le Brun PRA said, “Apart from his acknowledged achievements as an artist, for many years Michael has been a highly respected and key figure of the British Art establishment, whether as teacher, lecturer or board member and advisor.  His role as co-ordinator of the famous Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2015 led to record attendances and sales, and a reappraisal of its position as an important event in the contemporary art calendar. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing his sculpture displayed against the ideal green grass and blue skies of Windsor. Michael is the first to present his work in the landscape there.”

Windsor is pleased to announce that it has welcomed the first homeowners to its newly completed Windsor Park Residences, marking a key milestone in the development of the community’s latest residential offering. Designed by Merrill, Pastor & Colgan Architects and constructed by Huryn Construction, the Windsor Park Residences offer buyers the opportunity to own a home in this distinct New Urbanism community on a more intimate scale, while providing direct access to Windsor’s vibrant seaside lifestyle.

Located on the western edge of the community, the Windsor Park Residences are comprised of twelve one-level homes within five connected, three-story buildings, with the remaining residences starting at under $2 million. Six floorplans are offered and range from three to five bedrooms, with spacious living areas, 10-foot ceilings, and voluminous windows with views of the protected wetlands and the Indian River. Each residence includes multiple balconies and porches for the best of Florida indoor and outdoor living.

“The value of the property lies so much in its location with long views toward the Indian River Lagoon, the surrounding preservation areas and a community park to the east,” said Scott Merrill of Merrill, Pastor & Colgan. “All residences have exceptional views in several different directions without any compromising of privacy between residences.”

On Saturday, February 17, 2018 Windsor co-founder the Hon. Hilary M. Weston and Salvatore Ferragamo co-hosted the 2018 Windsor Charity Polo Cup to support families who are struggling with an Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diagnosis to help fund research to find a cure. Windsor donated a total of $280,000 in proceeds between beneficiaries, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County. Windsor is proud to announce that this year’s Charity Polo Cup raised the highest amount of charitable dollars and had the largest attendance since the event’s conception in 2012.

“Everyone here at Windsor is truly proud of the success of the event and the funds we were able to raise for these two very worthy causes,” said Betsy Hanley, president of Windsor. “We want to thank our Members, the local community and our sponsors for their overwhelming support and generosity.”

A world-class roster of international players participated in the match directed by Windsor’s director of equestrian operations, Max Secunda. New to the biennial event was international polo player and model, Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras. More than 2,000 people attended the event from around the world including Windsor Members and their visiting family and friends, local area residents, seasonal visitors, and polo enthusiasts from nearby Palm Beach.

In addition to an outstanding polo match, which is recognized as the premier high-goal charity polo match of the season in Vero Beach, the day also included a themed tailgate competition judged by J.McLaughlin. Additional festivities included a Windsor junior team demonstration, a Porsche concourse, a Specialty Retail Village, a rousing half-time performance by Vero Beach Pipe & Drums, a luxury raffle, and gourmet concession stands. Steve Weagle, chief meteorologist for the Palm Beach NBC affiliate WPTV, and a regular supporter of the biennial charity event, served as the luncheon’s emcee for the third time.

“Nearly one million Americans live with Parkinson’s disease and yet millions more family members and friends are touched by the ripple effect of a diagnosis with no current cure,” said Deborah W. Brooks, co-founder and executive vice chairman of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. “The generous support from friends like Windsor allows the Foundation to do more in our urgent pursuit to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease and close our doors.”

“We are so grateful for the continued support that the Windsor community provides to the hundreds of individuals and families who benefit from the services provided by the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County. This amazing gift ensures our organization is able to continue serving the community residents in combatting these disorders through support groups, movement classes and education programs,” said Peggy Cunningham, executive director of the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County.

The 2018 Windsor Charity Polo Cup was supported by national and local sponsors including CBRE Group, Inc., PNC Bank, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi of Melbourne, Château d’Esclans, Falasiri Oriental Rugs, Stick & Ball, J.McLaughlin, Casa Dragones, Laurent-Perrier, Maria Canale, Ingersoll-Rand, Sysco, Equestrian Living and Vero Beach Magazine, among others.

Windsor is honored to have hosted Soprano Meryl Dominguez for an operatic concert at Windsor’s iconic Town Hall on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, in support of the Deborah Voigt / Vero Beach Opera Foundation.

Accompanied by acclaimed pianist Mary Pinto, Dominguez performed an assortment of opera arias and musical theater pieces to an enthusiastic audience. Following the performance, members and their guests were invited to join Windsor for a champagne reception.

“We feel very fortunate to have such an outstanding opera company in Vero Beach that supports talented young singers with mentoring and scholarship programs such as the Deborah Voigt / Vero Beach Opera Foundation. It was wonderful to hear opera sung so beautifully by Ms. Dominiguez in our very own Town Hall,” said Windsor’s Marketing Director Jane Smalley.

The Deborah Voigt / Vero Beach Opera Foundation was chartered in December 2007 with the purpose of promoting and supporting talented young opera singers through a mentoring program. Promising young singers are offered the opportunity to spend time with Ms. Voigt and experience operatic artistry at the highest level, as well as a chance compete in the Deborah Voigt International Vocal Competition. Windsor is proud to be a sponsor of the 2018 operatic competition, providing a generous prize to the second-place contender.

“What a wonderful opportunity it was to bring one of Deborah Voigt’s rising young stars to Windsor’s Town Hall. Ms. Dominguez was very impressed with the amazing acoustics there, and was pleased to perform before such a receptive Windsor audience. We look forward to collaborating with Windsor in the future to bring outstanding talent to their residents,” said Dr. Joan Ortega-Cowan, President, Deborah Voigt / Vero Beach Opera Foundation.

A Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia where she studies with William Stone, and a 2016 winner of the Deborah Voigt / Vero Beach Opera Foundation Vocal Competition, Dominguez has performed in various roles including Die Königin der Nacht in Die Zauberflöte, Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus and Adina in L’elisir d’amore.

Dominguez’s performance was held at Windsor’s distinctive Town Hall, which was designed by architect Léon Krier. Referencing the American vernacular in its design, the structure rests on a podium with a simple rectangular plan. Thirty white columns support a steeply pitched roof that rises above the skyline of the Village. The Town Hall also serves as a non-denominational chapel and venue for weddings, concerts and lectures.

On Thursday, March 15, 2018, Windsor invited Members to participate in an intimate master class in its newly completed Wine Cellar, followed by a multi-course pairing dinner at the Weston Guest House. Hosted by renowned wine expert Anthony Giglio, the ‘Savor Windsor’ wine event provided Members with an opportunity to experience a tasting in the newly stocked Windsor Wine Cellar.

Officially opening this season, the new wine storage facility has the capacity to hold 40,000 bottles, plus an additional 15,000 if case stacking is used on floor space. The Wine Cellar offers ample room for the Club’s wine inventory as well as the growing collections of the Windsor Wine Association membership.

Windsor worked with international consulting firm WineTrend to concept and develop the new facility. An inviting tasting room that can accommodate small to medium-sized tastings features state-of-the-art wine cellar management software by eSommelier. Members are able to catalog and access their inventory through an online portal, where they also can review notes on wines and research values.

To kick off the two-part ‘Savor Windsor’ event, Anthony Giglio, who is an author, wine writer for publications including Food & Wine, and Global Wine Director for The Centurion Lounge, guided Members through a tasting master class as they sampled the renowned wines of The Spire Collection.  Comprised of the most esteemed wineries from the Jackson Family portfolio, the tasting highlighted selections from the mountain vineyards of Napa Valley and Sonoma to the remarkable hillsides of Bordeaux and Tuscany. Selections included:

Hickinbotham 2014 Trueman Cabernet Sauvignon, McLaren Vale, Australia
    Arcanum 2010 Valadorna, Tuscany
Château Lassègue 2010 Lassègue, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux
Vérité 2014 La Muse, Sonoma County
La Jota 2013 W.S. Keyes Merlot, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley
Cardinale 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Taking place in the beautiful great room at the Weston Guest House, the dinner reception showcased additional selections from The Spire Collection, paired with a delectable seafood and beef menu designed by Windsor Chef Robert Meitzer. The Weston Guest House, located just a short walk from the Village Centre, features seven well-appointed guest rooms surrounded by a lushly landscaped courtyard and inviting pool. The guest house is available to Members and their guests and is used for family reunions, bridal parties, private social events, board meetings and corporate retreats.

“I was delighted at the opportunity to connect with the Members of Windsor and share some remarkable wine selections with them,” said Giglio. “Being among such an engaged group of participants who have developed an eclectic palette for fine wines, it was great to introduce them to or reacquaint them with the diverse offerings from The Spire Collection.”
