On June 17, Windsor Member Kevin Bespolka and Windsor Gun Club Director Nicky Szápáry along with six other cyclists will cross 12 states and four time zones on a seven-day journey as part of The Race Across America. The two men are competing with team CYCLE FOR CAMERON in loving memory of the tragic passing of Kevin and Corinne Bespolka’s 16-year-old son Cameron.

Following Cameron’s death three years ago, his family founded the Cameron Bespolka Trust, a charity set up to empower today’s youth through the love of nature. Kevin, Nicky and their teammates will embark on this major journey across the country from Oceanside, California and finish in Annapolis, Maryland, raising money to honor Cameron’s passion for nature. Funds raised will contribute to the renovation of a 17th-century cottage on a nature reserve in Staffordshire, England, to provide the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds with a permanent base for educational activities. Named “Cameron’s Cottage,” it will pay homage to his dedication to wildlife observation.

“Windsor is proud to support Kevin and Nicky as they take on this physical challenge in Cameron’s memory,” says Betsy Hanley, President of Windsor. “As sponsors of their team, we wish them the absolute best as they raise awareness and funds for the Cameron Bespolka Trust and honor the memory of such a beloved and dearly missed young man.”

Various sponsorships are available and donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. Individuals from all over the world will be able to follow the team’s race online, through bi-weekly Race Across America newsletters, race blogs and social media.  More details on CYLCE FOR CAMERON and the mission of the Cameron Bespolka Trust can be found at www.cameronbespolka.com.

“We are overwhelmed by the response we have received to participate in this race as well as to support the initiatives of the Cameron Bespolka Trust.  While nothing can come close to filling the hole left by Cameron’s tragic death, it is special that his memory as well as his passion for birds and nature carry on through the Trust’s work.  We are eagerly and nervously looking forward to the race and dipping our toes into the Atlantic at the finish,” said Kevin Bespolka.

Race Across America is one of the most respected and longest running ultra-endurance events in the world, totaling 3,089 miles and 176,000 vertical feet of non-stop 24/7 racing. In 1982, four individuals raced from the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles to the Empire State Building in New York City, quickly captivating the public’s imagination to turn the race into what it has become today. There is no other race in the world like Race Across America, combining the distance, terrain and weather. The Race inspires everyone who has been a part of it, bringing together racers, teams, staff and fans alike.

    About Windsor

Windsor (windsorflorida.com) is a private residential community spanning 425 acres of lush barrier island between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean in Vero Beach, Florida. Established in 1989 by Hilary and W. Galen Weston of Toronto, Canada, Windsor was designed by renowned town planners Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk in the New Urbanism style of residential living, one that offers public and community spaces framed by timeless architecture and landscape design that celebrates its tropical and unspoiled setting. Windsor is comprised of 350 homesites in various styles including village homes, cottages and country estates, all remarkable for their signature Anglo-Caribbean architecture and gracious living.

Windsor provides homeowners privacy and seclusion combined with the finest amenities, exemplary services and sporting activities. Members enjoy an 18-hole links-style golf course, Har-Tru tennis courts, an Equestrian Centre, full-sized polo field, over four miles of riding trails, a fully equipped Fitness Centre, and Gun Club.  The Clubhouse, with interiors designed by Yabu Pushelberg, is a favorite gathering place much like the Beach Club which features private cabanas, its own restaurant, a pool-side Cabana Bar and 25-metre swimming pool.  Windsor is also known for its art gallery featuring a revolving series of world-class exhibitions, and a Town Hall, which serves as a chapel and a venue for weddings, concerts and lectures.

Celebrated author and Windsor Member David Smick hosted a presentation at Windsor on Tuesday, April 4, discussing and signing his bestselling new book The Great Equalizer: How Main Street Capitalism Can Create an Economy for Everyone. A reception followed, where more than 80 Windsor Members and their guests mingled with the author over cocktails.

In the book, Mr. Smick worries that without returning to historic levels of economic performance, and implementing other reforms, today’s millennials will become “the big losers of the 21st Century.” Filled with economic trials and revelations, The Great Equalizer was praised by both House Speaker Paul Ryan and Obama economic advisor Larry Summers, reaching The New York Times, LA Times, and U.S.A. Today bestseller lists.

Additionally, Mr. Smick’s 2008 award-winning bestseller The World is Curved was endorsed by President Bill Clinton. A writer for The New York Times called the book “astonishingly prescient.” The Washington Post called it “clairvoyant.” Characterized by openness of access and entry, and favoring entrepreneurship and small business, Mr. Smick calls for the great equalizer, a Main Street Capitalism of mass small-business startups and bottom-up innovation, all unfolding on a level playing field.

On March 29 Windsor hosted a tour of nine of the private residential community’s most exquisite gardens for members of the Ladew Topiary Gardens. The tour included stops at lush tropical oases overlooking the ocean to more formal, manicured and secluded courtyards, with special visits to Windsor’s Butterfly Garden and Weston Guest House, a grand residence with seven guest suites surrounding a lushly landscaped courtyard garden designed by renowned landscape designer Deborah Nevins.

“It was a pleasure to visit Windsor and tour such a stunning community,” said Susie Reichhart, Ladew Topiary Garden member and lead organizer of the tour. “Windsor is home to some truly astounding architecture and landscape design, and we look forward to future collaborations between Ladew and Windsor.”

Located in Monkton, Maryland, Ladew Topiary Gardens, known around the world for its topiary and flower gardens, was created in the 1930s by a self-taught gardener, Harvey S. Ladew.  Ladew created 15 thematic “garden rooms” on 22-acres of his 250-acre Maryland property and transformed an old white farmhouse into a stately Manor House for visitors to enjoy today.  Ladew Topiary Gardens is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to maintain and promote the gardens, house and facilities in keeping with the creative spirit of Ladew for the public benefit and for educational, scientific and cultural pursuits.  Both the house and gardens are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Eighteen Ladew members participated in the tour, visiting the Butterfly Garden, Weston Guest House, and seven other Windsor Member residences. The tour was led by Jane Smalley, Windsor’s director of marketing and Melanie Atkins, manager of the Weston Guest House.  The morning ended with a lunch on the Gallery Veranda of the Windsor Clubhouse hosted by Windsor Member Mary Mullan.

“I have the good fortune of living near Ladew Gardens in Maryland.  It is a very special place and truly one of the premier gardens in the country. I was very happy to host a luncheon for fellow Ladew supporters and friends who were on the tour. I would like to thank all of the Windsor Members who graciously opened their gardens and the Windsor staff for their warm welcome,” said Mary Mullan.

The acclaimed Windsor Charity Polo Cup has named The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research as its national beneficiary and the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County as its local beneficiary of the fourth installment of the biennial match. Proceeds from the February 2018 event will be donated equally to both charities to support individuals and their families who are living with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diagnosis and to help fund research to find a cure. Windsor co-founder The Hon. Hilary M. Weston and Salvatore Ferragamo will again serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for the 2018 event.

“Members at Windsor are looking forward to building on the momentum of the 2016 Windsor Charity Polo Cup as our community’s premier sporting event and the Windsor Charitable Foundation’s flagship fundraiser,” said Betsy Hanley, President of Windsor. “We are excited to partner with the outstanding teams at both organizations and to make a meaningful contribution in support of their efforts.”

The Windsor Charity Polo Cup is recognized as the signature high-goal charity polo match of the season and the 2016 event featured an exciting roster of top-level international players, including former Captain of the English national team Luke Tomlinson, and Magoo Laprida, Malcom Borwick, Augustin Merlos, Julio Arellano, Ruki Baillieu along with Salvatore Ferragamo and TV personality John Walsh. Last year, the Windsor Charity Polo Cup raised $250,000 for Alzheimer’s charities at the local and national level.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation has funded more than $650 million to accelerate a cure for Parkinson’s disease since its inception in 2000. And they do so with a dedication to efficiency: 89 cents of every dollar spent goes directly to research grants and initiatives to advance scientific breakthroughs. “We are proud to be recognized as the 2018 Windsor Charity Polo Cup national beneficiary and are committed to maximizing the generous support of this engaged community,” said Deborah W. Brooks, Michael J. Fox Foundation co-founder and Executive Vice Chairman. “There is currently no cure, and this event will help drive new and improved therapies for the estimated five million people living with Parkinson’s worldwide.”

“We are honored that Windsor has chosen our organization to be a recipient of the 2018 Charity Polo Cup,” said Peggy Cunningham, Executive Director of the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County.  “The funds received will be wisely invested in local programs that serve thousands of community residents grappling with memory and/or motion disorders and related neurodegenerative diseases, as well as their caregivers and loved ones.” The Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County is a local, independent non-profit serving community residents with disorders affecting memory and movement.

Since its establishment in 1989, Windsor has enjoyed an enviable reputation as a community that demonstrates clear and committed support for a variety of nonprofit organizations, both nationally and locally. Over the years, many deserving charities have benefited from proceeds raised at Windsor charity polo matches, including The Prince’s Charities (charitable foundation of HRH The Prince of Wales), The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, The Rett Syndrome Research Trust, The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County, Saint Edward’s Financial Aid Fund and Indian River County School District’s summer literacy program.

More information will be forthcoming on plans for the 2018 Windsor Charity Polo Cup, which will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2018.

The Windsor Community Spotlight Series continued yesterday evening with a talk by founding Principal of Didier Design Studio, Emmanuel Didier. Didier shared a presentation at the community’s Town Hall that outlined his vision for a Children’s Garden at McKee. A question and answer session followed and the evening concluded with a reception, allowing attendees to mingle with Didier over cocktails.

“As an architect, being able to present the plans for the Children’s Garden at McKee to the Windsor community was made even more poignant by the breathtaking backdrop of Windsor’s architecture,” commented Didier. “The tranquil setting was equaled only by the warm reception and enthusiastic response I received from Windsor residents. I look forward to returning.”

For years Windsor has enjoyed an enviable reputation as a community that demonstrates clear and committed support for the many arts and cultural organizations that make Vero Beach such a special place. Throughout the season, Windsor’s Community Spotlight Series showcases the area’s cultural offerings by inviting leaders of the various nonprofit organizations to share news on their latest developments.  The revolving series of lectures is held in the serene environment of Windsor’s Town Hall.

Carefully designed to spark imagination through exploration, the Children’s Garden at McKee incorporates a variety of elements – sand, water, wind, sky, jungle – to inspire creative play and interaction with nature at every turn, all in a close-to-one-acre setting. With features that appeal to every sense, the garden will encourage children to connect with nature in their own ways, writing their own stories and making memories to last a lifetime.

Since becoming independent from the Indian River Land Trust in 2003, McKee Botanical Garden has remained vibrant with strong leadership and commitment to excellence. As a natural complement to McKee’s established reputation for merit among similar cultural facilities in the Indian River County, the Children’s Garden at McKee is a unique project that will nurture and promote physical interaction and exploration for children in a world surrounded by technology.

On Thursday, January 26th, Windsor held a pop-up dinner with the famed New York culinary institution Le Cirque. Mauro Macciono, Le Cirque co-owner and son of the restaurant’s founder Sirio Maccioni, hosted the special event, which featured some of the eatery’s most beloved recipes from its contemporary European menu.

“It was a true pleasure to bring our Le Cirque culinary heritage to Windsor,” said Mauro Macciono, Le Cirque co-owner. “We look forward to more collaborations between the restaurant and community.”

More than 100 Windsor Members and their guests gathered at Windsor’s Beach Club for the special event, which kicked off with a cocktail hour and was followed by a four-course meal including marinated tuna, scallops black tie, roasted veal chop and a dessert trio consisting of creme brûlée, chocolate fondant and apple tatin. Mauro Maccioni led guests through each course and shared interesting anecdotes about the history of the restaurant and his family’s experiences in the culinary world.  At the evening’s conclusion, guests received a copy of A Table at Le Cirque: Stories and Recipes from New York’s Most Legendary Restaurant by Sirio Maccioni.

On Wednesday, January 18th, Windsor co-founders Hilary and Galen Weston, hosted a luncheon at The Carlyle to celebrate Composer, a major two-part exhibition of renowned British painter and President of the Royal Academy of Arts Christopher Le Brun PRA. Celebrated author and Vanity Fair Writer-at-Large James Reginato visited Windsor this past Friday, January 6, for a presentation and signing of his much lauded new book Great Houses, Modern Aristocrats, published by Rizzoli. A reception followed, where Windsor Members and their guests mingled with the author over cocktails. The beautiful book presents the intriguing stories and celebrated histories of some of the leading families of Great Britain and Ireland and the opulent residences that have defined their heritages.

“We are so pleased Mr. Reginato was able to spend some time at Windsor and share his book with our Members,” said Betsy Hanley, President of Windsor. “Hearing his first-hand insight into the homes and their owners and the fascinating stories behind them made for a greatly enjoyable evening.”

Filled with stunning photography, Great Houses, Modern Aristocrats is a remarkably intimate and lively look inside some of Britain’s stateliest houses, with the modern-day aristocrats who live in them. The book presents a tour of some of England’s finest residences, with many of the interiors shown for the first time.  Published by Rizolli in the fall of 2016, the book is already in its second printing.

Other contributors to the book are two very good friends of Windsor. The superb photography is by renowned Vogue, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair contributor Jonathan Becker and the foreword was penned by Viscount Linley, Hon. Chairman for Christie’s in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and India.

“It was really a delight to speak at Windsor – and to stay there, too! I could not have asked for a better audience at my talk, everyone was so engaged and hospitable,” said Mr. Reginato. “I was so impressed by Windsor itself, too. Everything is so beautifully done there. It’s a really special place.”
